StatisticalInvestigator Grade IVExamination 2008 Syllabus

Paper-I(ObjectiveType)

  • GeneralIntelligence:The Syllabus for General Intelligence wouldincludequestions of bothverbal type. The test may include questionsonanalogies, similarities,differences, space visualization,problemsolving, analysis, judgement,decision making, visualmemory,discrimination, observation,relationship concepts,arithmeticalreasoning, verbal and figureclassification, arithmeticalnumber seriesetc. The test will alsoinclude questions designed to testthecandidate�s abilities to dealwith abstract ideas and symbols andtheirrelationships, arithmeticalcomputations and otheranalyticalfunctions.

  • GeneralAwareness:Questions inGeneral Awareness component willbe aimed at testing thecandidate�sGeneral Awareness of the environmentaround him and itsapplication tosociety. Questions will also bedesigned to testknowledge of currentevents and of such matters ofeveryday observationand experience intheir scientific aspect as may beexpected ofaneducatedperson.


    The test will also includequestions pertainingtoHistory, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene,General Polity,IndianConstitution, Sports, Literature, ScientificResearch, Basics/fundamentals of Computer, etc. These questions will besuch thattheydo not require a special study ofanydiscipline.

  • English Language&Comprehension :Questions in this component willbedesigned to test the candidate�sunderstanding and knowledge ofEnglishLanguage and will be based onerror recognition, fill in theblanks(using verbs, preposition,articles etc), Vocabulary,Spellings,Grammar, Sentence Structure,Synonyms, Antonyms, SentenceCompletion,Phrases and Idiomatic use ofWords, etc. There will be aquestion onpassages and comprehension ofpassages also. The standard ofthequestions will be only of 10+2level

Paper-II:(ConventionalType)

  • Probability,ProbabilityDistributions, Binomial, Poisson,Normal,Exponential.

  • Compilation, Classification,Tabulation ofStatistical Data, Graphical presentationofdata.

  • Measuresofcentral tendency,measures of dispersion, measures of associationandontingency, scatterdiagram, correlation coefficient, rankcorrelationcoefficient and inearregression analysis ( for two or morevariables )excluding partialcorrelationoefficients.

  • Conceptof Population, randomsample, parameters,statistics, samplingdistribution of properties ofestimators andestimation of confidenceintervals.Principles of sampling,simple randomsampling, stratifiedsampling, systematic sampling tc.,Sampling andnon-sampling errors,type-I and type-II errors.Concepts ofHypothesis �Null and alternate,Testing of hypothesis for large samplesas well assmall samplesincluding Chi-square tests ( Z, t, F, c2 tests).

  • Index Numbers,Time seriesanalysis � components of variation andtheirestimation.

  • Nature andFunctions of Money,Value of Money,Fluctuations in the value of Money� Inflation andDeflation, MonetaryPolicy, IndexNumber.

  • International Trade-Free Tradeand Protection,Theories of InternationalTrade.

  • Foreign Exchange �Determination of the rate ofExchange � Purchasing Power Parity theoryand Balance ofPaymentTheory.

Relation between roots andco-efficients of apolynomialequation � Evaluation of symmetricfunction of roots of cubicandbiquadratic equation.

  • AlgebraofMatrices:Determinants, Simple propertiesofdeterminants, Multiplication ofdeterminants of orders two andthree,Singular and non-singularmatrices. Inverse of a matrix, Rank ofamatrix and application ofmatrices to the solution of linear equations(in three unknowns).Convergence of sequences, and series, testsofconvergence of serieswith positive terms, Ratio, Root andGausstests.

  • AnalyticGeometry:Straightlines, Circles, System of circles,parabola, ellipse andhyperbola instandard form and their elementaryproperties,Classification of curvesseconddegree.

  • DifferentialEquation:First order differential equation.Solution ofSecond and higher orderlinear differential equations withconstantcoefficientsandsimpleapplications.

  • Differential andIntegralCalculus:Limit, continuity and differentiabilityoffunctions, successivedifferentiation, derivatives ofstandardfunctions, Rolle�s andMean-value Theorems, Maclaurins andTaylor�sseries ( without proof)and their applications,Maxima and Minimaoffunctions of one and twovariables. Tangents andNormals,Curvature,Partial differentiation,Euler�s theorem forhomogeneous function,Tracing ofcurves.

  • Standard methods ofintegration, Riemann�sdefinition of definiteintegral,fundamentaltheorem of integralcalculus, quadrature,rectification, volumes andsurface area of solidsofrevolution.

  • Statistics:Frequencydistributions,Measures of central tendency, measures ofdispersion,Skewness andKurtosis, Random variables and distributionfunction,Discretedistributions, Binomial and Poissondistribution,continuousdistributions, Rectangular, Normal andExponentialdistributions,Principles of least squares, correlation andregression,RandomSampling, random numbers, Sampling of attributes,Large Sampletests formean and proportion, Tests of significance basedon t, FandChi-squaredistributions.

  • Thispaper will cover allthesubjects of commerce ordinarily taught at theB.Com. or similardegreecourses of Indian Universities. Specifically,it will includethefollowing subjects:

  • Costaccounting:Procedures involved in cost accounting,marginal costing, cost-volumeprofit analysis, Budgetary control,Standardcosting.
