The Thakur Hari Prasad Institute of Research and Rehabilitation for the Mentally Handicapped, is a professionally managed premier voluntary organisation that has grown over the past 4 decades on the firm foundation of a multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation of persons with mental handicap since inception. Its accomplishments since September 16th 1968 encompass many unprecedented initiatives, many sojourns into hitherto untread areas of rehabilitation services. Its philosophy and vision are coherent with its mission and implementation modes. It aims at promoting the quality of life of persons with mental handicap and associated disabilities through a holistic multidisciplinary qualitative service-delivery. The Institute has been accorded special consultative status by United Nations. THPI is recipient of National and International Awards from the President of India & RCI Hong Kong Foundation International and many other awards in recognition of its outstanding performance in the field of Handicapped Welfare. It is the only institute in the field of Mental Retardation honoured with U.G.C. award. It is situated on a campus of five acres. Since its inception it has not compromised till date on the multi-disciplinary approach to service delivery with qualified professionals and personnel. The professional faculty are drawn from different disciplines like Neuro- Paediatrics, Psychiatry, Clinical Psychology, Special Education, Speech Pathology and Audiology, Physio Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Medical and Psychiatric Social work. It also offers augmentative interventions to supplement clinical therapies through Dance Music, Mridangam, Yoga , Hydro therapy etc. The Institute has today grown into a pioneering and leading Institution. It has been engaged both in direct activities and also as an initiator of series of positive and affirmative actions to advance the cause and to ameliorate the conditions of the mentally handicapped. Its mission has been to secure them with their basic Fundamental Rights and benefits as fully participative members of a democratic egalitarian society. Training of human resource at different levels, research, advocacy, policy development are some of the other major pursuits of the organisation. THPI is involved in its various avenues of operation individually and also in collaboration with many national and international voluntary agencies and government machinery. Many of its initiatives are unprecedented and cost effective. Many innovative viable models that have emerged as a result of THPI�s explorations have implications for national level replication. The horizons of the large spectrum of THPI�s pursuits encompass concern for: 1. Protection of rights of persons with mental handicap and other disabilities in general. 2. Empowerment of persons with disabilities and their families through access to services access to information and promotion of their participation. 3. Enhancing the dignity of persons with disabilities through valued approaches and strategies of public education, awareness creation and community participation. THPI is a staunch believer of convergence of services and resources for mainstreaming the rehabilitation process ranging from prevention of disabilities, early detection, early intervention, education, training, employment and integration into the community. The Service users of THPI belong to all strata of society both in Urban and Rural areas. The services offered by THPI include direct and indirect services.
