Avisit to the Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) seeking information was like entering a maze. But not any more... just walk into any of the BCC's offices , fill up a form specifying details you want about any aspect of the BCC, get it within a month. Thanks to the Right to Information Act 2005.The BCC is putting in place public information officers who are to disseminate any information solicited by a citizen. Getting those hitherto elusive factoids - how many properties of the BCC are out on lease... how much of development work has spilled over from the previous years... the funds allotted for each ward etc is now just a form away. The BCC has appointed 288 officers for the purpose, many of these people already hold different posts but will additionally be incharge as information officers . What's more, the names and phone numbers of all these officers are even listed on the Corporation's website - www.bmponline.org. There are three kinds of officers - public information officers, assistant public information officers and the appellate officers. At the BCC's head office, there are 32 each of these officers and 18 in number at different zones. The commissioner himself is the public information officer for all information coming under his jurisdiction, for information relevant to his department . Accordingly, he would not be the person incharge for say, health, or revenue department.
