Amritsar the enchanting city of incredible Punjab is a famous tourist destination of India. Synonymous with the Golden Temple, this city attracts tourists from all over the world. The Golden Temple is the most famous and revered shrine of the Sikhs. People and devotees from different religious backgrounds come here to offer prayers.  The word Amritsar was coined by combining two words 'amrit' meaning nectar of immortality and 'sarovar' meaning pool.

In fact the Golden Temple of Amritsar which is called Harmandir Sahib attracts more visitors than the Taj Mahal. The city is a major cultural and religious centre of Sikhs. According to the legend it is at this place where Goddess Sita gave birth to her two sons named Lava and Kusha. The city is also known for Jallianwala Bagh Massacre which happened in 1919 under the British rule and Operation Bluestar in 1984 under the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The cuisine and culture of this city are very popular.
 
The Golden Temple was originally known as Hari Mandir which means the temple of God. The most striking feature of this temple is its dome which is made of pure gold. The temple stands amidst a pond. It was built by Guru Ram Das, the fourth Guru of the Sikhs. The Sri Guru Granth Sahib, the holy scripture of the Sikha is enshrined inside the temple. The old Jubi Tree in the north-west corner of the temple complex is said to possess special powers.

Durgiana Mandir is a must-visit temple here which is dedicated to Goddess Durga. It was built by the two philanthropists hailing from Amritsar. The complex of the temple also has shrines dedicated to Lord Hanuman and Bhairon. During the occasion of the Navratras a unique tradition is followed here. Parents dress up their sons as langoors in order to please the lord.
